Obituary of Mark Anthony Rubio

Mark Rubio’s love of life did not end with his death. Mark passed away on Thursday October 29, 2020 at the age of 50 after a fierce battle with cancer. Born and raised in Austin, he was a friend to all and a valued member of many communities. Mark’s open heart and contagious smile will be truly missed, and his loved ones will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.

He adored his wife Theresa (Esquivel) and loved his children Ethan, Zachary, Ryan and Desirae. Mark’s family is cherished by many people around the world who have shown their support with #RubioStrong.

In addition to his wife and children, Mark is survived by a large, loving family. He credits his parents, Roberto Rubio, Sr. and Rose Mary (Rendon) Rubio, for the role models they have been and continue to be to his family. He has been a supportive, beloved brother to Hector, Cynthia, Robert Jr., Miguel and Angelica. Mark will remain in the hearts of numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other dear relatives and close friends who have been cheering and praying for him and his family.

Known to many simply as "Rubio," Mark had a big personality, a big smile and an even bigger heart. He never met a stranger and he made a distinct impression on everyone he encountered.  In his 50 years with us, many knew Mark through softball, cornhole, kickball, photography, Christmas parties and other adventures with family and friends. No matter how you met him, you immediately knew you had a friend.

Mark enjoyed sports throughout his life and built community both on and off the field. He was a fixture at Austin’s Krieg softball complex and played all over the city, state and country on several teams, both elite and recreational. Among many honors, he captained countless championship teams and was inducted into the Advertising Softball World Series Hall of Fame in 2011. No matter the skill level of his teammates, he was generous with his time and talents and his mischievous, kind spirit had a way of making people feel welcome.

In recent years, Mark turned his quick-pitching prowess to the game of corn hole, competing in leagues and tournaments with friends and occasionally his son, Ethan. He built community here too, mentoring younger players and helping them see how they could amplify their individual talent and go much farther as a team. Mark quickly became one of the top players in Texas. In January, and in true Rubio fashion, he and his partner won the benefit tournament hosted in his honor. Austin Airmail league rankings show him tied for 5 th place for 2019-2020.

Pallbearers will be Hector R. Rubio, Robert Rubio, Jr., Miguel Rubio, Arturo Reyes, Sean Wray, and Zachary Zapata. Honorary pallbearer will be Michael Rendon.

In lieu of flowers, the family of Mark Rubio asks that you honor his memory by donating to Hospice Austin and/or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Lie-in-State will be held from 3:00-5:00 p.m., Monday, November 2, 2020. Evening visitation and Rosary will be private.  In advance, the family thanks you for your love and understanding as they face this difficult time.  Recitation of Holy Rosary will be live-streamed on Monday, November 2, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. for those unable to attend.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at St. Ignatius Martyr Catholic Church, 126 W. Oltorf St., Austin, Texas.  Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery, 3650 S. IH 35 Frontage Rd., Austin, Texas.

Each person entering the funeral home, church, and cemetery will be required to wear a mask
