Obituary of Zulema M. Fuentes

Please share a memory of Zulema to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Our beloved Zulema Medel Fuentes, age 74, of Austin, TX earned her angel wings and went home to heaven, on  Wednesday, November 24th, she was surrounded by her loving family.

Zulema was born on March 24, 1947, to Pablo and Francisca Medel. She married her loving husband of 52 years, Andrew Fuentes, on April 7, 1969, and proudly welcomed twin sons, Michael, and Marc on June 16, 1970.  Zulema and Andrew raised their sons here in Austin and rejoiced as their family grew to include her “tres amores”, her 3 grandsons Noah, Andrew and Matthew, and loving daughter-in-law Tamara.

Family was everything to her. She had a way of always making a person feel special; whether by cooking favorite meals, creating a thoughtful handmade gift, giving the best advice, or just sharing logical words of wisdom. She was the very definition of “Grammy”.  She loved spending time with her grandkids, her family, being outdoors “messing with the plants” and attending mass on Sunday’s.  Her nurturing and loving nature will be missed so much by so many.

Above all, Zulema loved God. Through it all, her faith was unwavering. With pure heart she served Him faithfully demonstrating her many talents; from beautifully hand-crafted items to sell and support the church as part of the Ladies Club at Saint Ignatius Martyr, planting and growing beautiful plants and flowers on the church grounds or volunteering for one of many church activities over the many years as a parishioner at Saint Ignatius Martyr.

She is survived by her loving husband Andrew Fuentes, sons Michael Fuentes and wife Tamara, Marc Fuentes and Lisa Mejia Fuentes, grandsons, Noah Andres Fuentes, Andrew Michael Fuentes, and Matthew Charles Fuentes. Brothers Robert Medel, Oscar Medel and wife Mary, sisters Olivia Medel, Gloria Nassour, Mercedes Ciani and husband Kenny, and Mary Ann Medel and Rudy Garcia, many, nieces, and nephews and honorary daughter Sonia Craig.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Pablo and Francisca Medel; sisters, Zulema Medel and Alicia Medel; her brother, Henry Medel; her sister-in-law, Evarista "Eva" Medel, and her brothers-in-law, Gilbert Lopez and Herbert Nassour.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Medel, David Medel, Tony Medel, Eddie Medel, Gabriel Medel, Rudy Garcia, Paul Medel, and Daniel Torres.  Honorary pallbearers will be her treasured grandsons, Noah Andres Fuentes, Andrew Michael Fuentes, and Matthew Charles Fuentes.
