Obituary of Steven Escalante

Our beloved Steven Escalante of Austin age 75, was called to our heavenly father on December 28, 2023. He is preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Petra Escalante, paternal grandparents, Juaquin and Soledad Moncada, maternal grandparents, Antonio and Librada Ramirez, and his sisters, Isabel Bueno, Emily Pina and brothers Antonio “Tony” Escalante and Louis Escalante, Sr.

Steven is survived by his wife of 54 years Manuela “Nellie” Fabian Escalante; daughters Christina Escalante, Angelicia Villarreal and husband Raymundo and Jennifer Escalante. Grandchildren: Julian Villarreal, Selena Olivio, Joseph Salazar, Christopher Olivio, Adrian Villarreal, Jenise Davis and Laila Vera; Great Grandson Isaac Villarreal.

He is survived by his brother Martin Escalante. Sisters Janie Escalante, Rebecca Escalante, Yolanda Haros, Hopie Rodriguez, Carmen Olvera, Patsy Garcia and Geneva Escalante; numerous nieces and nephews, family, and friends.

Steven was born and raised in Austin, Texas in the Montopolis neighborhood and was the oldest of thirteen kids. He was a migrant worker where he met his future wife Manuela. Steven was drafted and proudly served his country for the US Army branch for six years.

His hobbies included his love for music and played the bass guitar in a conjunto band alongside with his father Martin Escalante. Steven loved fishing and taught his daughters and grandchildren where many memorable excursions were made. He also coached an all-women’s softball team called the Rookies. Steven loved and reserved weekends in the fall to watch his favorite football teams the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Longhorns. He was a very hard worker and worked in the AC business for 43 years as a sheet metal fabricator.

Serving as pallbearers will be Julian Villarreal, Joseph Salazar, Christopher Olivio, Martin Escalante, Jose Luis Reyna Jr., Robert Bueno, Lee Fabian, and Pedro T. Fabian Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Adrian Villarreal, Isaac Villarreal and Santiago Fabian Jr.

Visitation will be from 5:00-9:000 p.m. with Recitation of Holy Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at Mission Funeral Home - South Side, 6204 S. First St., Austin, Texas.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at Dolores Catholic Church, 1111 Montopolis Dr., Austin, Texas.  Burial will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
